Founded in 1913, the Orillia Power Corporation (OPC) generates and distributes electricity to 13,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. The company generates power through three water-power generating stations, the oldest of which dates back to 1917. OPC takes great pride in operating and maintaining these environmentally friendly stations.

Ensuring that original station documentation was available for reference presented OPC with a unique challenge. Engineering drawings, equipment manuals and other project files were irreplaceable. Degradation due to age, or misfiling and loss was a threat to station operations. Reproducing drawings was cost prohibitive, and in many cases, not feasible. OPC selected FileNexus® as their document management solution.
“Our initial reason to implement FileNexus® was to facilitate the filing and retrieval of our engineering drawings, but that was just the starting point in making our overall document retrieval much more efficient.” – John Mattinson, President, Orillia Power Corporation
As a first step in deploying FileNexus®, the Engineering department undertook the task of capturing all of the relevant records dating back to 1917, including original drawings, maps, and equipment manuals. Recent project files were next: storing associated construction documents, easements, maps, memos, drawings and work orders. All records, old and new, were safely stored in one cohesive location, and could be recalled instantly.
OPC has since leveraged FileNexus® to improve document management for HR, Health & Safety, Policies & Procedures, Board of Directors documentation, Shareholder documents, Financials, Customer Service, and PR. Regulatory reporting on various issues has also been vastly simplified, by having all of the information in one place. Even emails are being archived, allowing staff to move key business information out of their inboxes.
